Looking for accommodation in Johannesburg? The Capital
Melrose is part of The Capital Hotels and Apartments group and is located next
to the Melrose Arch precinct in Johannesburg. The hotel only recently opened on
1 May 2019.
I stayed in the 1 bedroom apartment at the Capital Melrose
recently and here’s everything you need to know about the hotel.
Apartment-style hotels
This is yet another apartment hotel by The Capital Hotel
Group. Apartment-style hotels are very limited in South Africa and yet
increasingly popular among business travelers or anyone who wants a more
home-away-from-home experience with the conveniences of hotel living.
Location
Especially in a big city like Johannesburg, location is so
important. The hotel is right next to (And walking distance of) Melrose Arch, a
precinct bustling with high end fashion stores and café culture. You can go for
coffee at Starbucks, enjoy a brunch at Paul, have ice cream for dessert at
Haagen Dazs and have dinner at Jamie’s Italian. The feel and vibe of the area
is very high end and feels very London Chic. Sandton City mall and surrounds is
about 5km away, making it close enough to the main business district if you’re
in town for work. O R tambo is about 20km away. While Jo’burg CBD is about 10
minutes away.
Facilities
Room
The property has standard rooms (for up to 2 people), studio
rooms(for up to 4 people) as well as 1 bedroom apartments(for up to 2 people).
I stayed in a one bedroom apartment and will provide more information mainly on
that. However ALL room options have a flat-screen tv with satellite channels, a
kettle, a shower, a hairdryer, a desk and a private bathroom with free
toiletries. Since it’s a new hotel, I should mention an added benefit being
that everything looks and is brand new!
The one-bedroom apartment
The one bedroom apartment is one of the most equipped apartment
rooms I’ve stayed in. Firstly, it has a kitchen, lounge, bedroom and bathroom,
all of which are fully equipped.
The kitchen has a sink, fridge with a freezer (not just a
bar fridge), kettle, stove, sink and all the crockery and cutlery to go with it.
It also had a washing machine, tumble dryer and ironing board. While you don’t
have any detergents in the room, you can apparently arrange to get them with
reception. You also have a dining table with 2 chairs.
The lounge area has a couch, large flat screen tv with dstv
and a coffee table. I didn’t have much time to make full use of the tv so I can’t
really comment on the channels available. The lounge also opened up to a
balcony. My balcony had a view of the street and Melrose arch precinct – true city
living.
The bedroom had a large king size bed and large flat screen
tv while the bathroom had a bath tub, shower, toilet, sink and mirror (The
mirror I absolutely loved – it had a built in light which made doing my makeup
super easy). I don’t think I even need to go too much into detail with my
description – the pictures do the talking!
Food
I only had breakfast at the hotel on one occasion and the hotel offers a buffet breakfast. The buffet had lots of options, taking into account, it was a week day with probably a smaller variety than you can expect on a busy weekend. There was the usual breakfast options but also lots of pastries and treats like donuts (Hey, if you’re on holiday you can indulge in a donut for breakfast).
Service
The staff at the Capital Melrose really stood out for me. I
was alone during my stay and the staff did their upmost to make me feel welcome
and at ease. They were so friendly, and in general, so kind and sweet! I felt
even sadder leaving because I felt like I was saying goodbye to new friends. I
must also mention the manager, Daniel, who made the time to chat to me about
the property and what they’re all about.
The only “hiccup” during my stay would be that when I
arrived (at around 4pm) I had a half hour wait for my room to be ready. However,
the staff did try to accommodate me by putting me in a temporary room for the
time being.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay at the Capital Melrose. I think
it’s a great choice if you’re a business traveler or young professional looking
for convenience, efficiency and a home-away-from-home experience.
