Experience the Magic of Joburg Ballet’s The Sleeping Beauty This Winter

Rehearsals are in full swing at the Joburg Ballet studios as the company prepares to dazzle audiences with a new staging of The Sleeping Beauty, one of the most iconic ballet classics. This mid-winter performance, produced by Italy-based ballet mistress Sophie Sarrote, will grace the stage at the Joburg Theatre from June 28 to July 7. The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra will play Tchaikovsky’s magnificent music live for all but two of the nine performances.

A Timeless Tale of Love and Triumph

In this beloved fairytale, a malevolent spell causes a princess to prick her finger and fall into a hundred-year slumber. However, true love prevails when a handsome prince awakens her with a kiss, ensuring a happily-ever-after ending.

Stellar Casts and Guest Artists

Joburg Ballet’s production features five impressive casts drawn from the company’s leading dancers, including three guest artists. The opening night on Friday, June 28, at 19h00, will feature Monike Cristina and Paris Opera Ballet star Guillaume Diop in his South African debut. The duo will also perform on Sunday, June 30, at 14h00.

Other notable performances include:

  • Nicole Ferreira-Dill and guest artist Nelson Peña Nuñez on Saturday, June 29, at 14h00, and Friday, July 5, at 19h00. Peña Nuñez, originally from Cuba, is a principal dancer with the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Kazakhstan.
  • Tammy Higgins and Revil Yon on Wednesday, July 3, at 11h00, and Saturday, July 6, at 14h00.
  • Shannon Glover and Ruan Galdino on Thursday, July 4, at 11h00, and Sunday, July 7, at 14h00.

Sarrote brings extensive experience and artistry to this enchanting performance. Joburg Ballet is proud to collaborate with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Chad Hendricks, who will bring Tchaikovsky’s sweeping romantic score to life at most performances.
