Cape Town’s hospitality scene is set for an exciting transformation as The Table Bay Hotel embarks on a remarkable journey of reinvention. After nearly 30 years of welcoming guests from across the globe, this beloved Grand Dame closed its doors on 15 February 2025 to undergo a major refurbishment. Come December 2025, the hotel will reopen as InterContinental Table Bay, Cape Town, elevating its luxury offering while maintaining the warmth and world-class service that have made it an institution. Sun International will continue managing and operating the hotel under a new franchise agreement with IHG Hotels & Resorts, one of the world’s leading hospitality brands, ensuring that The Table Bay remains a premier destination in the V&A Waterfront.

A Legacy of Excellence, A Future of Innovation

Since its grand opening in May 1997, an event graced by Nelson Mandela, The Table Bay Hotel has been a landmark of elegance and refinement. Over the years, it has hosted royalty, rock stars, world leaders, and sports icons—including England’s legendary Barmy Army, who famously drank the bar dry in 2016! This rich legacy is now set to evolve into a new era of luxury and sophistication.

Reflecting on this transition, Table Bay General Manager Joanne Selby shared, “Our final guests checked out on 15 February, marking the end of an unforgettable chapter. As we pack up the past, we look forward to an exciting future. The heart of The Table Bay—our incredible staff—will remain unchanged, ensuring the same warm hospitality when we reopen.”

When the doors reopen in December 2025, guests can look forward to a reimagined luxury experience with 306 exquisitely designed rooms and suites offering unparalleled views of Table Mountain, the bustling harbour, and the Atlantic Ocean.

The hotel will retain its prime location in the V&A Waterfront, ensuring easy access to Cape Town’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment destinations. Whether you're indulging in gourmet cuisine, soaking in the breathtaking scenery, or experiencing top-tier hospitality, the InterContinental Table Bay will set new standards of luxury.

Continuing a Tradition of Unmatched Hospitality

In a rare and commendable move, all staff members will remain on board during this transformation, ensuring the same personalized service and familiar faces when guests return.

Sun International CEO Anthony Leeming expressed enthusiasm for this evolution, saying, “For nearly three decades, The Table Bay has been a symbol of hospitality excellence. While this marks the end of an era, we are thrilled about its next chapter. Partnering with the V&A Waterfront and IHG, we are committed to delivering an even more extraordinary experience for our guests.”
